Position Summary:

The General Machinist is to operate CNC and manual mills and lathes, load and unload material, indicate fixtures and inspect and verify conformance to specifications. Ability to read and interpret part drawings/blueprints is required, as well apply knowledge of mechanics, mathematics and metal properties to layout machining procedures.


Duties and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, lathes, milling machines or grinders
  • Set up, adjust and operate machines and tools to perform machining operations
  • Select the appropriate tools and materials to be used in preparation of machining work
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics
  • Read blueprints, layouts, sketches, or work orders to assess work piece specifications
  • Apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, to machining operations
  • Measure, examine or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers and gages.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining processes
  • Notify supervisor of electrical and mechanical repairs and adjustments to machines.
  • Perform and approve 1st and last piece inspections to production personnel, after receiving qualifying training
  • Perform minor machine maintenance, such as oiling and cleaning machines, dies, or work pieces, or adding coolant to machine reservoirs
  • Set up, operate related tools that remove excess material of burrs from surfaces, sharpen edges or corners, buff, hone, or polish metal pieces
  • Replace or Repair worn tools, and sharpen dull cutting tools
  • Identify tooling by stamping or engraving information on tool
  • Report any problems with production, machining, tooling or quality to the Operation Manager
  • Other assignments on an as needed basis


Position Qualification Requirements:


  • Vocational/Trade School or equivalent previous work related skill or knowledge required
  • CNC operating experience
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics and their applications
  • Knowledge of blueprints, drawings and models
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English
